This is the larger context the previous image came from. I took the previous image first (kneeling next to the water) and then stood up and took this one to show context lost in the closeup.

Race Brook Falls, Massachusetts. On the way down from Mt. Race Loren and I noticed a great reflection in the new ice on Race Brook. To the left in this frame the brook makes a small drop over some rocks making ripples that are freezing in this pool. I’m beginning to see how these wonderful ice patterns form and it’s going to help me look for spots where I can shoot more.

Brook on Paradise Lane, Bear Mountain, Connecticut. We hiked up Bear Mountain yesterday to check out the water flow in local streams but in fact, they were all back to just a bit above normal. Just not enough drainage above this area to cause an extended heavy flow like in southern Vermont where there are hundreds of miles of rivers feeing bigger rivers.

Still, the pre-fall tree and leaf reflections were beautiful as was the top of Bear. Very clear after the big rain.

These images are part of a series taken on visits to the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California over an eight year period. When I fly to Los Angeles to visit my now 96 year old mother, we enjoy visiting the Getty Center which is relatively close to her house and accessible to her in a wheelchair. Even though she can’t see well enough to enjoy the art there anymore, she likes being in the space and watching me take photographs of the architecture. It’s great for both of us and her slowing me down has allowed me to see things there I never would have seen at my more typical faster pace.

I have a show of these images coming up in January in Litchfield, Connecticut. More on that in a later post. I’m still processing images, making and framing prints, making notecards, and working on a magazine of these images and this will no doubt consume me for the entire fall.

Here’s the entire series (so far) up on flickr: Getty Center Abstractions.

I usually find this type of modern architecture sterile, but here the architect Richard Meier created spaces that are not only pleasant to be in but include interesting lines, windows, angles, curves, and textures in almost every view. Looking abstractly at these details reveals patterns that capture my eye as a photographer, and as many visual artists know, once you notice something like this, it’s hard to let go of it. I continue to visit the Getty and add to this collection.
